History of Earth Day
The story goes that Earth Day was conceived by Senator Gaylord Nelson after a trip he took to Santa Barbara right after that horrific oil spill off our coast in 1969. He was so outraged by what he saw that he went back to Washington and passed a bill designating April 22 as a national day to celebrate the earth. It was in the wake of this same tragedy that Community Environmental Council was born and began working on ways to clean up our natural resources. It is due to these events that Santa Barbara is considered the birthplace of the environmental movement. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970. CEC organized a celebration again in 1990 and has done so every year since. Click here for more detail on the history.

Location
The festival is located in the heart of Santa Barbara at the Sunken Gardens of the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, 1100 Anacapa Street. Click here for a map to the festival.

Special Note
Dogs are not allowed in the Sunken Gardens during large public events. Please leave your canine friend at home. Earth Day is a smoke-free event and cigarettes are not allowed at the County Park.
Thank you.

The 5th Annual Global Green USA Pre-Oscar Party

Posted on Mar 7th, 2008 by Hybrid Roots : Cultivators of Green Goodness Hybrid Roots

Wednesday, February 20th 2008 at the Avalon Hollywood

Hybrid Roots was treated to a night of all things green at the The 5th Annual Global Green USA Pre-Oscar Party. It was an amazing event celebrating conscious vibes for the Earth. Live performances by Michael Franti (Spearhead), Michelle Branch, Damien Rice and Oscar nominated artists Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova from the movie “Once”. Michael Franti got the crowd feeling uplifted with positive tunes about the environment and social change. He unified the crowd to bring his message home; that peace and action are choices within your soul. The night was filled with flowing organic beverages including Mothership Wit beer from New Belgium Brewery & Krol Vodka. Video montages surrounded the eye complimenting the beauty of the Avalon’s green transformation for the night. Global Green presented their film “The 11th hour” (Co Directed by Leonardo Decaprio) reminding people that awareness and support is still needed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and Global tragedies are imminent if we don’t unify to make a change immediately. Every small change that we can make is a step in the right direction. The event was successful in raising $420,000 to support further Global Green efforts that will benefit us all for years to come.
